Volusia ARES will be participating in the Florida QSO Party on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at the Volusia County Fire Training Center, which is located at 3889 Tiger Bay Road, Daytona Beach, Florida 32124. Someone will be monitoring the KV4EOC 147.240 (+600Hz – Tone 123.0 Hz) repeater to help with directions. Park in the paved parking lot and follow the ARES signs to the screened porch, where we will be holding the event.
We will meet at 10:00 AM to begin setting up the radio and antenna and the on-air contesting starts at noon. Our primary focus is to give new hams and non-hams the opportunity to get on the air and experience HF! The Florida QSO Party is a great opportunity to get your feet wet with HF because we will have a script of exactly what you need to say! And… there will be a mentor sitting right beside you to help. The contest runs until 22:00 and we have the location long enough to stay and operate the entire time, if people desire to stay!
We will also be building some roll-up Slim Jim VHF/UHF antennas. These antennas are great for increasing the range of your handheld or mobile radio and they roll up to fit in a backpack or glove compartment. We have enough supplies to make a few of these antennas and the parts cost about $12.00.
We will figure out how many people are at the location and order pizza for lunch. Dinner is to be determined, but there are grills at the location that we can use if we decide to grill out.
Bring chairs if you want to sit in the sun. There are picnic tables in the porch area.
Volusia ARES will have a cooler with ice and water in it. If you want something else to drink, please bring it along. (Another cooler with ice will be great, too!)
If you have any questions, please call James Lea (WX4TV – Emergency Coordinator) at (386) 414-0788. We hope to see you there!
