In just 2 months the National Weather Service (NWS) in partnership with the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) will once again be holding it’s annual SKYWARN Recognition Day! This year will be a special milestone as it will be the 20th year in a row of the event and we are happy to announce that the NWS in Melbourne (WX4MLB) will once again be participating. SKYWARN Recognition Day enables NWS offices to recognize our Amateur Radio operators for their commitment in helping keep their communities weather safe. Amateur Radio operators will visit their local NWS offices (over 100 participating offices in total!) and will be on the airwaves making contacts and exchanging weather information across the globe for a full 24 hours. This year for 2018, the event will run from 7 PM Friday, November 30th and continue through 7 PM Saturday, December 1st.
To make this another successful event we will need volunteer operators to help make contacts throughout the entire 24 hour period. We will have HF, 2M and Echolink stations set up at the office, so no matter what license or experience you have in amateur radio there is definitely a place for you to help out!
If you are interested in operating, please reply back to this email and provide the following information:
-Hours you can operate
-Mode you would like to operate (HF, 2M or Echolink)
While we do take pride in the high number of contacts our office typically makes each year (with our amateur radio operators achieving some of the highest contact totals out of all NWS offices during past events), SKYWARN Recognition Day is not a contest, so please don’t shy away from signing up. Whether you can only volunteer for an hour or even several, any assistance would be helpful. Food and refreshments for our volunteers will be provided by NWS Melbourne, including pizza for dinner on Friday night and chili and cornbread for lunch on Saturday.
During the event we will also be holding a special “SKYWARN Open House” on Saturday, December 1st from 10 AM to 4 PM for ham radio/SKYWARN operators as well as their family and friends to see our operations and also for tours of the office. If planning on attending the Open House, please RSVP by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with the following information:
-Number in your party
-What time you plan on arriving
I will be sending out additional information and updates ahead of the event. If you have any questions in the mean time, please don’t hesitate to ask. Also, for more information and to see pictures and stats from last year’s event, please visit:
Hope to see many of you again this year!
